Master Class 001P: Improvising with Major Scales

In this example, I present a detailed analysis of the first three measures of John Coltrane’s legendary composition “Moment’s Notice.” This approach to improvisation is based on a combination professional experience, academic research, and asking excellent players about their improvising.  The illustration above is based on four levels.

1st        Basic Harmonic Analysis
2nd       Identify Tonal Center
3rd        Scale Association
4th        Rhythm & Range

The chords/harmony for these measures are: Emin7, A7, Fmin7, Bb7, and EbMaj7.
Instead of viewing each chord as a separate entity, consider the possible connections these chords have with each other. Emin7 & A7 have a ii7 – V7 relationship in the tonality of D major. Fmin7, Bb7, and Ebmaj7 have a ii7-V7-I relationship in the tonality of Eb major. In light of this information, a D major scale can be used (strategically) to improvise over the Emin7 – A7 harmony. In addition, the Eb major scale can be used (strategically) to improvise over the Fmin7-Bb7-Ebmaj7 harmony. When developing your solo do not forget about the sound of your choices. Keep in mind feel, phrasing, range, rhythm, and tempo when applying your theoretical skills.

Have fun and experiment with your concepts. Combine the heart and mind in your solos; it is possible to “know” what you are doing and still create weak, uninteresting solos.

***The solo is not provided for memorization. The intention is to illustrate an idea. Once you get a grasp of the concept, please, please, please come up with YOUR OWN MATERIAL. I want to promote intellectual transfer, original thinking, and creative independence. Besides, I have already said that. I look forward to what you create.
